The Fourth of July is more than just a date on the calendar. For Citrus Heights, California, it’s a time to gather, celebrate freedom, and enjoy a night of fun, food, and fireworks. This year, the city is turning up the patriotic spirit with the third annual Stars & Stripes Celebration at Van Maren Park on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, this is the place to be for Independence Day festivities.
Why Do We Celebrate Independence Day?
Before you grab your picnic blanket and sunscreen, let’s take a quick look at why July 4th matters. Back in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the United States as a nation free from British rule. Since then, fireworks, parades, and gatherings have become the hallmarks of this all-American holiday. It’s a day to remember our history, appreciate our freedoms, and, of course, enjoy some good old-fashioned fun.
The Main Event: Stars & Stripes Celebration
Van Maren Park is the heart of the party this year. The city has pulled out all the stops to make sure there’s something for everyone. Here’s what you can expect:
-
Live Music: Get ready to dance or just tap your toes. Mercy & the Heartbeats will take the stage at 7 p.m. and keep the energy high until 9:30 p.m.
-
Food Trucks: Eleven local food vendors will be serving up everything from savory bites to sweet treats. It’s the perfect chance to support local businesses and maybe discover your new favorite snack.
-
Kid Zone: The little ones are in for a treat with a special area hosted by Sunrise Recreation & Parks District and the Citrus Heights Police Activities League. The Kid Zone is open until 8:30 p.m., so there’s plenty of time for fun before the big show.
-
Fireworks: The grand finale kicks off at 9:45 p.m. with a patriotic fireworks display that’s sure to light up the night sky and bring everyone together.
Know Before You Go: FAQs for a Smooth Celebration
What time should I arrive?
The event officially starts at 6 p.m., but you can arrive as early as 5 p.m. to snag a great spot on the lawn. Just remember, the food trucks and activities don’t open until 6 p.m.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Small coolers (up to 48 quarts) are welcome, so feel free to pack your favorite snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Leave the alcohol at home, though. The event is alcohol-free to keep things family-friendly.
Bringing your furry friend?
Dogs are welcome, but keep in mind the crowds and fireworks can be overwhelming for some pets. If your pup isn’t a fan of loud noises or lots of people, it might be best to let them sit this one out.
Need shade?
Small personal umbrellas are allowed, but canopies are not. Be considerate of your neighbors when setting up your spot.
What about parking and accessibility?
There’s limited ADA parking at City Hall and nearby lots, with golf cart shuttles to help you get to the park. Make sure your disabled parking placard is visible to staff at the entrance. If you’re biking in, take advantage of the secure bike valet service at City Hall, provided by Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates.
What should I wear?
With temperatures expected in the 90s, lightweight and breathable clothes are a must. Show off your patriotic pride with your best red, white, and blue outfit.
Want to get involved?
Volunteers are the secret sauce behind every great event. If you’d like to help out, check out the City’s Volunteer Hub for available roles.
Tips for a Fantastic Fourth

Arrive Early: The best spots go fast, especially for the fireworks show. Bring a blanket or a low chair for comfort.
-
Stay Hydrated: It’s going to be warm, so bring water or grab a cold drink from one of the food vendors.
-
Support Local: Skip the drive-thru and try something new from the food trucks or local restaurants.
-
Be Courteous: With big crowds, a little patience and kindness go a long way. Share the shade, keep walkways clear, and help keep the park clean.
